Unique stories of doctors around the sea of Marmara.
Dr. Jirayr Kaynar
Dr. Jirayr Kaynar born in 1923, was a highly respected and deeply loved internal medicine doctor who dedicated his life to serving the people of Kadıköy, Istanbul. Often called the "Angel of Kadıköy" and the "Father of the Poor," Dr. Kaynar ran his modest clinic in the heart of Kadıköy’s historic marketplace for 64 years. He became a local legend not just for his medical skills but for his immense compassion, frequently treating patients for free, especially those who were struggling financially.
Born in the Moda neighbourhood, Dr. Kaynar completed his education at Aramyan Uncuyan Armenian School and later graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1949. He was known for his emphasis on the traditional method of hands-on physical examination, believing deeply in the personal connection between doctor and patient.

He passed away in 2019 at the age of 96. His funeral was held at Surp Takavor Armenian Church in Kadıköy, and he was laid to rest in Hasanpaşa Uzunçayır Armenian Cemetery. To honour his memory, the Kadıköy community has advocated for naming the street where his clinic stood after him. Dr. Jirayr Kaynar remains remembered as a shining example of kindness, professionalism, and selfless care.
